Saudi Arabian authorities have officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, following the non-sighting of the crescent moon.
The announcement was made on Wednesday via the verified HaraminInfo social media platforms, which confirmed that the Shawwal moon was not sighted, thereby extending the month of Ramadan to 30 days.
“The crescent moon has NOT been sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, 20th March 2026,” the statement read.
The development means Muslims in Saudi Arabia will complete the full 30 days of fasting before marking the end of the holy month with the Eid celebration.
In Nigeria, attention now shifts to the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, whose official declaration will determine the date of Eid-el-Fitr in the country.
The Sultan traditionally announces the sighting or otherwise of the moon based on verified reports from across the country.
Muslims are therefore awaiting an official statement from the Sultanate Council to confirm whether Nigeria will align with Saudi Arabia’s declaration or observe Eid on a different date, depending on local moon sighting.
