The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Caucus has heightened the political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling for the emergence of a consensus governorship candidate from Kwara North Senatorial District.
Addressing journalists on Saturday at the NUJ Press Centre in Ilorin, the caucus, represented by Chief James Bamisaiye Ayeni, urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to initiate the process of candidate selection without delay, in order to prevent internal conflicts within the party.
The elders cautioned that any delay in setting clear guidelines for the selection of candidates could trigger unhealthy rivalry and undue political maneuvering among aspirants vying for the APC ticket.
They strongly advocated for a consensus arrangement, noting that such an approach would foster unity within the party and ensure a smooth and credible primary process in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Reiterating their stance on power rotation, the caucus emphasized that fairness, equity, and justice demand that the next governor of Kwara State should emerge from Kwara North.
According to the group, Kwara Central would have occupied the governorship position for about 20 years by 2027, while Kwara South would have held it for eight years, leaving Kwara North yet to produce a governor in the current democratic dispensation.
“It is only fair and just that Kwara North produces the next governor,” the elders stated.
They further highlighted the district’s consistent support for the APC, noting that Kwara North delivered significant votes for the party in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections, even when candidates emerged from other senatorial districts.
The caucus also urged party leadership to engage critical stakeholders in the selection process to ensure the emergence of a broadly accepted candidate.
On security matters, the elders commended both the Federal Government and the Kwara State Government for ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, while expressing sympathy for victims of banditry.
They reaffirmed their support for the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and pledged continued loyalty to the APC as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
