Residents of Owa-Onire, a tourist community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, have abandoned their ancestral homes following persistent attacks by armed bandits.
A viral video from the community showed the once-populated settlement deserted and occupied by animals after residents fled to safer locations.
In response to the worsening security situation, the Nigerian Police have taken control of the affected community and parts of the Kwara South Senatorial District to restore peace.
The Coordinator of the Kwara South Joint Security Network, Zubair Olaitan, recently led police operatives on an assessment visit to some of the deserted communities, during which the video was recorded.
Olaitan commended security personnel for their efforts along the Kwara-Kogi border but called on indigenes of the senatorial district to provide greater support to help displaced residents return home.
Despite ongoing security operations, communities in the Kwara South and Kwara North Senatorial Districts remain hotspots for bandit activities. More than 170 people, mostly women and children from Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, are still being held captive by bandits.
Similarly, victims abducted during a church service in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area, have yet to regain their freedom, while some are reported to have died in captivity.
