Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, representing Kwara North Senatorial District, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, describing June 12 as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, resilience, and the unwavering determination of the Nigerian people to defend democratic values.
In a statement issued on Friday, the lawmaker noted that the June 12, 1993 presidential election remains one of the most significant events in Nigeria's political history, representing the collective will of the people and their commitment to democratic governance.
According to Senator Umar, although the annulment of the election tested the nation's unity and challenged public confidence in democracy, Nigerians remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice, accountability, and democratic rule.
He said the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria's Democracy Day is a fitting tribute to the heroes and heroines whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms currently enjoyed across the country.
Reflecting on Nigeria's democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999, the senator observed that over two decades of uninterrupted democracy have provided citizens with opportunities to elect their leaders, express their opinions, and actively participate in nation-building.
He emphasized that democracy promotes inclusion, accountability, institutional development, and the peaceful transfer of power, unlike military rule which concentrates authority in the hands of a few.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business further highlighted the critical role of the National Assembly in sustaining democratic governance, noting that the legislature remains the voice of the people through lawmaking and oversight functions aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in public service.
Senator Umar stressed that strong democratic institutions, adherence to the rule of law, and responsible leadership are essential for Nigeria's growth, stability, and prosperity.
As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, he urged citizens to embrace democratic values, peaceful coexistence, civic responsibility, and active participation in national development.
He also called on Nigerians to continue praying for leaders at all levels, asking Almighty God to grant them wisdom, courage, fairness, and compassion in the discharge of their duties.
The senator expressed optimism that through collective commitment and unity, Nigeria would continue to advance inclusive growth, sustainable development, and shared prosperity for all citizens.
"June 12 remains a powerful reminder that though the voice of the people may be challenged, it can never be permanently silenced," he stated.
