The Kwara State Police Command has organized a security Sensitization themed "Campaign against cultism and other social vices".
The event which took place today 1st if July 2026 at the Police Officers' Mess, GRA, Ilorin, the state capital.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, While addressing the gathering said the initiative reflects the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to preventive policing through education, partnership and community engagement rather than relying solely on law enforcement.
"Schools are safe spaces where children should learn and develop without fear, stressing that rising cases of cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, bullying and other social vices require collective action by security agencies, parents, teachers, religious leaders, traditional institutions and the wider community", he said.
CP Adekimi urged students to avoid negative peer influence and associations that encourage criminal activities, noting that many young people become victims of crime simply because of the company they keep.
He also implored students to embrace discipline, honesty, hard work and dedication to their education, dismissing claims that education is a scam.
Addressing parents and teachers, CP Adekimi called for closer supervision of children and students, urging them to instil moral values, discipline and respect for the law while maintaining open communication with young people.
Speaking with NewsMakers, the State Coordinator of POCACOV, ASP Ibrahim Murtala, said the campaign is designed to prevent young people from embracing cultism, cybercrime, drug abuse and other criminal activities through sustained sensitisation.
According to him, the command plans to expand the campaign to primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions across Kwara State.
"We want to catch them young. It is better to prevent these crimes than to begin looking for solutions after the damage has been done," he said.
Therefore parents should pay close attention to behavioural changes in their children, including isolation, unusual demands for money and sudden changes in attitude, saying such signs could indicate exposure to criminal influences.
He urged Teachers and school counselors to create an atmosphere where students can freely report cases of bullying, intimidation or attempts to recruit them into cult groups.
Meanwhile a representative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Superintendent Aliu Olowolagba, spoke extensively on bullying, describing it as intentional, repeated behaviour aimed at intimidating or excluding others.
He elucidate that bullying goes beyond physical assault and includes any deliberate act of intimidation or abuse of perceived strength against weaker students, whether in classrooms, playgrounds or sporting activities.
Olowolagba urged students to respect one another and avoid behaviours capable of creating fear or emotional harm among their peers.
