The Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishments of Nigeria (APPMEN) has urged governments at all levels to complete abandoned and ongoing projects and fulfil campaign promises as political parties prepare to begin campaigns for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Sunday, APPMEN said with campaigns scheduled to commence on August 7 in line with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, political leaders should focus on delivering the dividends of democracy rather than engaging in premature political contests.
The association called on governments to implement at least 50 per cent of the promises made during the last electioneering campaigns, saying doing so would boost public confidence and earn the trust of voters ahead of the next elections.
It also urged leaders to put national interest above personal and political considerations, stressing the need to restore Nigeria’s image as the “Giant of Africa.”
APPMEN identified youth empowerment and support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as critical to economic recovery, urging governments to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
According to the association, Nigeria has abundant human and natural resources that should be harnessed to create jobs, attract investment and improve the living conditions of citizens.
While commending governments for what it described as notable achievements recorded over the past three years, APPMEN challenged leaders to do more to improve infrastructure, strengthen the economy and enhance the welfare of Nigerians.
The association also called on citizens and other stakeholders to contribute to nation-building and support efforts aimed at promoting peace and development.
It advised political parties and candidates to avoid hate speech, violence and other actions capable of undermining peaceful elections, urging them instead to focus on issue-based campaigns.
“Elections should not be seen as a do-or-die affair. We need one another now and after the polls,” the statement said.
APPMEN further urged governments to justify the huge allocations received in the past three years through visible projects that directly improve the lives of Nigerians, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the country’s democratic and development process.
