Outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and contribution to strengthening regional integration and promoting stability across West Africa.
Touray described Tinubu as a committed statesman whose leadership and influence had played a significant role in reducing political and security tensions across the sub-region.
Speaking with State House correspondents after a farewell audience with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Touray said Nigeria’s leadership under the President had been instrumental to the progress recorded in restoring stability within the region.
“If today we are saying tensions have reduced in West Africa, we should give credit to President Tinubu and Nigeria,” he said.
The outgoing ECOWAS Commission president stressed that Nigeria’s strategic position in West Africa remained indispensable, noting that the country had consistently provided leadership whenever the region required direction.
He also commended the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and other members of the Federal Executive Council for their contributions to regional affairs.
Touray explained that his visit to the President came ahead of the expiration of the current ECOWAS Commission’s mandate at the end of August, describing it as an opportunity to appreciate Tinubu for his support throughout his tenure.
“President Tinubu has been a pillar of the region. We could not leave office without thanking him for the role he has played, and continues to play, not only for Nigeria but for the entire region and Africa,” he said.
Reflecting on his two-year tenure as ECOWAS Commission president, Touray described working with Tinubu as a privilege, praising the Nigerian leader’s openness, generosity and commitment to regional integration.
He added that he was particularly grateful for the opportunity to work closely with Tinubu, listen to his counsel and benefit from his guidance during his tenure.
