In every great community, there comes a time when the people must look beyond familiar political arguments and ask themselves a fundamental question: who best represents their hopes, aspirations and future? For Ibagun Okelele, and indeed the wider Ilorin East/Ilorin South Federal Constituency, the 2027 general elections present another opportunity to reflect on the kind of leadership that can deliver meaningful representation, expand opportunities and give the people a stronger voice at the national level.
It is within this context that the aspiration of Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo deserves serious attention.
As a worthy indigene of Ibagun Ward and a former Kwara State Commissioner for Works, Quawiy brings to the political conversation a combination of youth, public-service experience, community connections and an ambition that has generated interest ahead of the 2027 elections. His aspiration is not merely about occupying a political office; it also presents an opportunity to discuss how the next generation of leadership can contribute to the development of our constituency.
For records of social and political dynamics of Ibagun Okelele, leadership is not measured by titles alone. It is also reflected in one's relationship with the people, willingness to assist others to attain their full potentials and commitment to community development. Quawiy Olododo's generosity, engagement with people and willingness to contribute to the welfare of his constituency and even beyond are reasons for the confidence in his aspiration.
At his declaration of interest for the 2027 election, Quawiy highlighted issues such as employment generation, improved incomes, support for entrepreneurs and accountable representation. These are important concerns for a constituency whose young people need opportunities, whose small businesses require support and whose communities expect effective representation. His previous service as Commissioner for Works also provides a relevant part of his public record for constituents to examine as they consider his aspiration.
An important consideration is the place of young people in our political future. Young people should not be regarded merely as campaign mobilizers, spectators or supporters who become relevant only during election periods. They should also have opportunities to participate meaningfully in leadership and public decision-making. Quawiy's aspiration brings this question to the forefront. His youth is an advantage in terms of energy, engagement and perspective, but the strongest case for his candidacy rests on the combination of that youth with experience, demonstrated commitment and a clear programme for representation.
Ilorin East and South constituency needs leadership that understands the challenges facing young people, that appreciates the importance of education and skills development, that recognizes the realities of unemployment and can advocate for policies that expand economic opportunities. A representative should not simply speak about the problems of the people; the office should be used to pursue practical solutions and prioritize the wellbeing of their people.
Quawiy's aspiration can be viewed through the lens of his father political philosophy, achievements and capital development who previously represented historically Ilorin East/Ilorin South Federal Constituency. It is therefore understandable that some people may raise questions about family influence and the concentration of political opportunities; it is equally important to recognize that a candidate's family background does not, by itself, establish whether that individual is qualified, capable or deserving of a fair hearing. Quawiy’s proven track records, ideas, and the value needs most in a broader context for our constituency.
If the background conversation from the few constituents are genuinely about widening political participation, then that principle should be applied fairly. Where few people making a deceitful comment against a candidate on the grounds of even deserving succession but support another candidate whose background raises similar questions! Isn’t that a mere sentiment-based and odd political maneuver?
However, this should not become another form of discrimination, the answer to concerns about political concentration is not to create a different set of exclusions, rather establish fair standards and allow the people to examine candidates on relevant grounds, including experience, integrity, accessibility, policy proposals and capacity to serve.
Conversely, Quawiy has proven himself beyond the fact that he is the most deserving candidate that will best represent our constituency. This objection doesn’t depend on which individual or family is involved? rather, they challenge the community to approach political arguments with consistency and fairness.
Equally, those who argue against Quawiy's aspiration should be encouraged to look beyond his surname and explain precisely what they believe disqualifies him from consideration. If their concern is his relationship to a former representative who perhaps served the constituency outstandingly, they should explain why that relationship should outweigh his individual record and proposals. If their concern is the possibility of political dominance, they should articulate the evidence for that concern and apply the same standard consistently. If they believe another aspirant has a stronger case, they should demonstrate that through the aspirant's qualifications, achievements and plans for the constituency.
Political debate becomes more meaningful when it is based on evidence and clear principles rather than assumptions about family ties. The people deserve arguments that can withstand scrutiny, not standards that change according to who stands to benefit.
For Ibagun Okelele, this is an opportunity to approach the 2027 elections with maturity and a clear understanding of what representation should mean. The community's interests must remain central to the discussion. Our people need opportunities for young people, support for businesses, improved infrastructure, access to education and skills development, and a representative who will engage with constituents beyond the campaign season. They need someone who understands that the responsibilities of a federal legislator are enormous and translational.
Effective representation involves legislation, oversight, constituency engagement and sustained advocacy for policies and programmes that can improve people's lives. It also requires transparency, accountability and a willingness to explain what has been achieved and what remains unfinished.
Quawiy Olododo's experience in public service, his stated priorities and his relationship with the community provide a starting point, but the campaign should continue to communicate specific proposals and measurable commitments. The people should know what he intends to pursue, how he plans to pursue it and how they can hold him accountable.
Such an approach would strengthen the public conversation around his aspiration and allow residents to assess him beyond political labels. It would also demonstrate that the campaign is concerned not merely with winning an election but with earning the confidence of the people through a credible vision of representation.
Ultimately, the 2027 contest should be about the future of Ilorin East/Ilorin South, the opportunities available to its people and the quality of leadership they expect. Quawiy Olododo is a useful youth with public-service background, community engagement and has stated interest in employment, entrepreneurship and accountable representation which are relevant parts of that assessment.
For Ibagun Okelele, the conversation should not be reduced to whether a father and son can both aspire to a public office at different times. The more important questions are whether the son can demonstrate his own capacity, whether his plans address the peoples’ needs. Family background should neither guarantee a seat nor automatically close the door to one. In a democracy, the right to contest belongs to the individual, while the authority to elect belongs to the people.
As the 2027 elections approach, Ibagun Okelele and other communities across Ilorin East and South have an opportunity to contribute constructively to this wider conversation about leadership and representation. The community should welcome serious ideas, demand credible commitments and resist arguments that cannot be defended by consistent principles.
Quawiy Olododo's aspiration is a crucial element of such conversation, and his public record and proposed agenda should remain at its centre. The future of our constituency deserves nothing less than an open, informed and fair assessment of the people seeking the mandate to represent it.
