Some concerned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara Central have issued an open letter to the National Chairman and leadership of the party, cautioning against what they described as a potential legal and political crisis surrounding the Kwara Central Senatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the letter jointly signed by party stakeholders across the senatorial district, the group expressed concerns over the emergence of Senator Saliu Mustapha in the APC senatorial primary process despite claims allegedly made by his associates that he only obtained the APC Governorship Nomination Form and not the Senatorial Nomination Form.
The stakeholders noted that the APC Senatorial Primary Election held on May 18, 2026, had two publicly known aspirants cleared for the contest — Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the incumbent Senator representing Kwara Central, Senator Saliu Mustapha.
According to the letter, statements allegedly credited to the Senator’s media aide, Nasif Sholagberu, popularly known as “Shopen,” and comments reportedly made by his Chief of Staff, Tunji Buhari, suggested that Senator Saliu Mustapha did not purchase or obtain the senatorial nomination form.
The group further alleged that the Senator privately affirmed to certain individuals that he did not obtain the senatorial form, a development they warned could expose the party to post-election litigation.
Citing Section 84(13) and (14) of the Electoral Act 2022, the stakeholders warned that failure to comply with the provisions governing party primaries could lead to the disqualification of a candidate or legal challenges from aggrieved aspirants.
They stressed that their intervention was not borne out of personal grievances against Senator Saliu Mustapha but rather out of concern for the stability, credibility, and electoral future of the APC in Kwara Central.
“We do not want a situation where the party wins politically at the polls but loses legally in court due to avoidable technical issues,” the letter stated.
The stakeholders also maintained that political offices should not be treated as family inheritances, adding that Kwara Central has many competent individuals capable of representing the district effectively if Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq eventually decides not to proceed with the senatorial ambition.
The letter urged the APC national leadership and stakeholders to act wisely and address the concerns in line with the Electoral Act to safeguard the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 elections.
