The newly established Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) in Kwara State has recorded a major operational breakthrough following its first major intelligence-led operation carried out across criminal black spots in Ilorin metropolis.
The operation, which took place on Sunday, May 18, 2026, targeted suspected cultists’ hideouts and criminal enclaves located around Kilanko and the Post Office axis of Ilorin.
According to a statement made available to The Crown Online, the operation was executed based on credible intelligence and in line with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Rilwan Disu.
Operatives of the VCRU, working in collaboration with community policing stakeholders and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) Special Squad led by Kayode Usman, carried out coordinated raids that successfully disrupted identified criminal hideouts in the area.
During the operation, one AbdulRahman Jimoh, popularly known as “Kangol,” described by the police as a notorious suspected cultist who had long been on the unit’s watchlist, was arrested at about 9:00 p.m. around the Post Office axis of Ilorin.
Police authorities stated that the suspect is allegedly linked to several cult-related activities and other violent crimes within the Ilorin metropolis. A search conducted on him reportedly led to the recovery of suspected hard drugs.
In a related operation at Kilanko, four additional suspected cult members were also apprehended by the operatives.
The Command noted that the operation reflects the VCRU’s sustained intelligence-driven strategy aimed at tracking, disrupting, and neutralizing violent criminal elements across Kwara State.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, while the suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, commended the personnel of the VCRU for their professionalism, courage, and commitment to intelligence-led policing in the fight against violent crimes in the state.
He also reassured residents of Kwara State of the Command’s determination to sustain aggressive operations against criminal elements, warning cultists, drug peddlers, and other criminal actors to steer clear of the state or face the full weight of the law.
