The Kwara State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained campaign against cultism with the arrest of two suspected cult members and the recovery of a locally fabricated firearm during an intelligence-led operation in Ilorin metropolis.
The operation was carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in collaboration with other tactical teams of the Command, following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance on the activities of suspected cult groups within the state capital.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the operation led to the arrest of 33-year-old Abdullahi Jimoh Omotoho, a suspected member of a notorious cult group operating in Ilorin. During the operation, officers recovered a locally fabricated Beretta pistol from the suspect.
Further investigations and intelligence gathered from the arrest led to the apprehension of another suspect, Abdullahi Kareem Kawu, popularly known as "B-Red," who is currently assisting investigators as efforts continue to dismantle criminal networks linked to cult-related activities in the state.
The Command disclosed that preliminary investigations have yielded useful information regarding the operations of criminal gangs within Ilorin metropolis, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other fleeing members of the syndicates.
Commending the professionalism and commitment of the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, reaffirmed the Command's determination to sustain intelligence-led policing and proactive crime-fighting strategies aimed at ensuring that criminal elements have no safe haven anywhere in Kwara State.
He also warned individuals involved in cultism and other violent crimes to desist from such unlawful activities or be prepared to face the full weight of the law. The Commissioner further urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that would aid efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.
The suspects remain in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
