The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not in a position to win the 2027 presidential election, stating that the party should instead focus on rebuilding ahead of the 2031 polls.
Wike made the remarks during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Tuesday, where he said the PDP's immediate priority should be winning elective positions at the sub-national level while resolving its internal challenges.
According to the former Rivers State governor, the party needs time to reorganise before it can mount a serious challenge for the presidency.
"I have always said that the PDP can't win the presidential election now. All we are doing is to win some sub-national seats and organise the party against 2031," Wike said.
He stressed that leadership of a country like Nigeria requires adequate preparation and a stable political platform, rather than a rushed ambition.
"We must be very clear to people. I don't like people who think that because it's just an election, you must win.
"Being a president is not to come out today and run to be president. No. We have a crisis, and you can't wake up within six months to be president of a country," he added.
Wike's comments come amid ongoing efforts by the PDP to resolve its internal divisions and reposition itself ahead of future electoral contests.
