The Accord Party has called for the resignation or removal of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to unfreeze the Osun State Government’s accounts.
President Tinubu had expressed concern over the timing of the EFCC’s action, which came less than two weeks before the Osun State governorship election.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Accord National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, accused the anti-graft agency of exceeding its statutory powers, violating the 1999 Constitution, and acting with impunity.
Mgbudem alleged that the EFCC’s action was politically motivated and aimed at weakening the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke while creating an advantage for the opposition ahead of the election.
He, however, commended President Tinubu for his prompt intervention and directive to immediately unfreeze the accounts, noting that the President’s expression of embarrassment over the development demonstrated the seriousness of the matter.
Despite the presidential intervention, the Accord chairman maintained that the EFCC leadership had lost public confidence and should no longer remain in office.
He therefore called on Olukoyede to resign or be removed by the President in order to restore public trust and integrity to the anti-graft commission.
Mgbudem further warned against the use of state institutions to influence electoral outcomes, stressing that elections must not be militarised, manipulated, or subverted through the deployment of government agencies for partisan purposes.
He urged all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and ensure a level playing field for all political parties and candidates ahead of the Osun governorship election.
